On February 20, 2018, the US Department of State sanctioned Ansarul Islam as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) pursuant to Executive Order 13224. According to the designation statement, “Ansarul Islam is a terrorist group based in Burkina Faso. The group has launched numerous attacks in northern Burkina Faso near the border with Mali.”
